Time for a Family Road Holiday
Occasionally it can prove to be somewhat of a challenging task not to mention a test of one's patience to decide on where to go on your caravan or motorhome family holiday. However, if you take your time and decide wisely it can be an unforgetable experience.
Below are a number of useful tips and ideas to make sure your journey is hassle free and safe.
Start by making a list of bits and pieces you will need to take with you. This will certainly include a first aid kit, plus foodstuff, snacks, drinks, and if you have young children, plenty of toys and games, colouring books, paper and crayons, a portable DVD player so your kids can enjoy their favourite movies; and a cooler. A good strategy is to ask the youngsters exactly what games they would like to take, within limitations of course.
Ensure that any food that you take is healthy in nature as too many junk foods could have the children jumping all over the motorhome. The family vacation is meant to be an exciting and enjoyable holiday so you will want to stop the kids from getting bored, this will also mean a more relaxing time for you.
If you have very young children you will need to take the nappy bag and wipes for the unexpected spills, blankets and pillows if relevant and a favourite item or stuffed animal for the young ones is a good idea as well.
Once you have finally settled on your destination, pick a route the best route you can. If it can be a scenic route this will be easier on the eye and much more relaxing.
Looking through the various route options you will want to find out where the various stopping off points are for fuel and short break. If you have the time you can also look for interesting places to visit on route and take a short time to visit, this will also make a long journey a lot easier to deal with.
While on the road make sure that you make pit stops regularly. This is going to enable the children to run around and let off some steam, whilst permitting the grown ups to stretch and re-energise. Take a football so that the entire family group can have some fun while exercising at the same time.
Last but not least, it is extremely crucial that safety issues are met. This includes having the motorhome examined by your local mechanic. Make sure that that the oil and filter are changed; the tyres are well inflated (don’t forget the spare tyre, too); the motorhome window wipers are in good condition and the motorhome is serviced before you head out.
Additionally, you may want to include the following items, a lawn chair, extra blanket, emergency road kit, umbrellas, water, torch and batteries. In the glove compartment include a first aid kit and cell phone charger. Always keep medications in a Ziploc bag in the glove compartment as well.
Before you finally set off ensure you have important phone numbers of family and friends that you may need to contact.
If you enjoy scrapbooking, this road trip may be a perfect opportunity to add new treasures to the book. As you make stops at some scenic sites, ask the kids to find an item they would like to include in the scrapbook. Or if the kids point out something along the way that they find fascinating, take a picture of it to include in the scrapbook as well.
Include the children in the planning process. Of course their level of decision making will depend upon their age, but it will make it more enjoyable for you and them and will make them feel part of the holiday adventure
