Don’t Get Lost in Hiking
Hiking is a relatively safe activity, but there are still some dangers that you have to face. Getting lost is probably the most annoying problem especially for new hikers. New hikers usually have a false sense of security. Do not worry about that. Here are some tips that will help you avoid getting lost and know exactly what to do if you do get lost.
In fact, for most hikers it is easy to get lose. A slight misstep off the trail can easily disorient you. Hopefully you know how to step back because going in the wrong direction will make it worse. If you have misread the map, you just will begin to go the wrong way.
First, you should be familiar with the map and know where you are going. Just keep your eyes on the landmarks along the way, then you will know approximately how far you have been walking and when you can see the next landmark. Keep walking on marked trails unless you have to look for something else. You need a compass and use it in combination with the map. A GPS unit is also helpful but do not rely on them entirely if there is no signal. Make use of your navigational equipment before heading out. Also be aware of the position of sun and stars at all time.
In fact, landmarks are very important to you. Once you get lost, stay calm and try to retrace your steps if you can remember the landmarks you've seen before. Most trails start at the bottom of a hill or mountain, so following the downward flow of the stream you will find the bottom of the hill or mountain. It is good idea to keep a mobile phone with you. Have fun in your hikes!
