Touring the Welsh Town of Knighton, Powys
Touring the Welsh town of Knighton, Powys, in the Wales - England border region can be a fine activity to undertake. The town is located on the banks of the River Teme, which is a designated Site of Scenic Special Interest (SSSI), having been so denoted by English Nature, in 1996. English Nature was a former United Kingdom government agency which has since seen its operation rolled into other natural resources management agencies.
The town straddles the border between England and Wales, as does the Knighton Railway Station, which is actually sited in the English town of Shropshire, about 100 yards from the station. The name of the town, Knighton, probably derives from the Old English language. In this case its name has various meanings, including soldier or personal follower.
Owing to its location in Wales itself, there is a Welsh name attached to the town, though it hasn't taken wide or official hold, unlike in many other regions of Wales located farther to the west of the England - Wales border region. The ultimate origins of Knighton are somewhat hazy, but evidence of Iron Age activity has been found by archeologists.
There is an annual festival in the town, called Carnival and Show. It is of great interest to many tourists from all over the United Kingdom and many parts of the world. It is also interesting to note that the area around the town hosts a very visible observatory and telescope, which is part of Spaceguard UK, an effort to watch space for near-Earth objects.
The preserved county of Powys, Wales is the area in which Knighton resides. It enjoys a population of around 134,000 people. The English-Welsh border regions of this county are particularly beautiful and evocative of a time in the United Kingdom that is long gone, sadly.
