Touring and exploring Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is to see a town that proceeds at a pace which pays homage to its past and its present. It is a classic English town of about 21,000 people located in the eastern England ceremonial county of Lincolnshire. The town itself is part of the West Lindsey local government district in the county. There are several other towns of similar population within West Lindsey.

Gainsborough as a town houses one of the best examples of a classic English manor house in all of Britain. It is an example of 1400s style of construction using wood framing. This sort of medieval strong house, known as an 'old hall,' was built over twenty years, starting in 1460. At different times in history, both Richard III (in 1483) and Henry VII (in 1541) stayed as guests. Additionally, there is an old and historic castle located just to the north of the town, and which takes its name from the town name itself.

During the English Civil War, the town acted as a garrison for forces loyal to the royalist faction. This began around 1643 and continued throughout the war. There were two notable battles which occurred in or around the town that same year. Since then, Gainsborough has had a stately existence, proceeding through the centuries in fine town fashion. It capitalized on its industrial activity in the 20th century, hosting several large manufacturing entities.

There is also an annual festival which takes place during the second weekend of every June, the Gainsborough Riverside Festival. It is a celebration of arts and the heritage of the town, and has been a steady presence on the scene since 2001. Gainsborough also has one of the top state schools in the country, which is a local high school. There is also a fine leisure center, a community arts college and a vocational education college in the town.

The ceremonial county of Lincolnshire, in which Gainsborough resides, currently enjoys a population of around 1 million people. It sits in the East Midlands of England, and is the second-largest (in land mass) of the English counties. Gainsborough and Lincolnshire show off fine East Midland life and culture at every turn.
