Biff asked:
I am about to buy my first touring caravan and am very excited. Looking for some advice and tips about the whole experience. Would particularly like to know about insurance, upkeep, accessories etc and if it is advantagous to join a caravan club?
We are quite a young couple but just love the idea of taking off in beautiful Scotland for the weekends and having our own place. Thanks.

I don’t personally but my parents did (and still do) and when I was growing up we would just take off in it for 4 weeks (Dad was a college lecturer so long holidays) and I remember those times very fondly!
Basically we would just head up north (from Worcestershire) – stop at the Yorkshire dales for a bit and then also head off up to the west coast of Scotland, to the Isle of Skye in stages,
A lot of people knock it but having a caravan holiday is great – you have a lot of flexibility – you can stay longer if you like somewhere or move on if you don’t. Most of the creature comforts can come with you on holiday and its your own bed (I mean not like hotel beds when countless others have slept there). They have one with a power shower as well now (although at my time it was your head under the on-site tap if we stayed on a farmside campsite!).
I would def. sell the benefits of joining the caravan club if you are planning to take all your hols in it, (or if you have long holidays) you get discounts on the sites and also having the info to hand when you are driving around and just want to stop for the night is invaluable
I’m not an expert on the insurance side of things – but like anything just shop around to get the best deal
My parents store the caravan on the drive and just wash it regularly. One issue nowadays is security though, with the price of caravans they are targeted for theft, so make your you have secure facilities when storing it (my parents use to take it off the wheels but later invested in wheel clamps!) and it might also be wise to have a clamp for the campsite as well depending on what type it is and how secure it is
Anyway don’t let that put you off. Brilliant way to have a holiday’! So have fun
